Our Philosophy
Close, fulfilling relationships are among the strongest predictors of life satisfaction, and the Healthy Masculinity Center was founded to help men build fulfilling relationships in a rapidly changing world.
Men today -especially as partners and fathers- are still expected to be strong and take the lead, but are now also expected to be emotionally sensitive and aware. Yet few grew up with models that showed them how to do both. The Center aims to help reduce the confusion, discomfort, avoidance, and loneliness experienced by many men, young and old.
Questions of belonging, purpose, self-worth, and what we bring to our relationships increasingly lead to a broader question: What is my way of being a man, and what is expected of me as a man in a more equal world?
Drawing on therapeutic work with men and research on masculinity, fatherhood, relationships, and family life, we offer perspectives that may help men better understand themselves, their relationships, and the changing place of men in society.
We chose the term healthy masculinity for a simple reason: there are ways of living as men that are healthier and more beneficial than others - for our personal wellbeing, intimate relationships, families, and communities.
Healthy masculinity is not one prescribed model of manhood. It means becoming more conscious of our strengths and vulnerabilities and developing ways of living that serve both ourselves and those around us.
Through essays, commentary, practical concepts, self-assessments, podcasts, and public activities, HMC aims to contribute an evidence-informed perspective to this evolving conversation.
